Review & Excerpt Tour for Only a Breath Apart by Katie McGarry

Would you dare to defy destiny? Are our destinies written in stone? Do we become nothing more than the self-fulfilling prophesies of other people's opinions? Or can we dare to become who we believe we were born to be?

“A gorgeous, heartfelt journey of redemption and love” (Wendy Higgins), ONLY A BREATH APART is a young adult contemporary novel from critically acclaimed Katie McGarry. “Haunting, authentic, and ultimately hopeful” (Tammara Webber), order your copy of ONLY A BREATH APART now!

About ONLY A BREATH APART:

They say your destiny is carved in stone. But some destinies are meant to be broken.

The only curse Jesse Lachlin believes in is his grandmother’s will: in order to inherit his family farm he must win the approval of his childhood best friend, the girl he froze out his freshman year.

A fortuneteller tells Scarlett she's psychic, but what is real is Scarlett’s father’s controlling attitude and the dark secrets at home. She may be able to escape, but only if she can rely on the one boy who broke her heart.

Each midnight meeting pushes Jesse and Scarlett to confront their secrets and their feelings, but as love blooms, the curse rears its ugly head…

~SCARLETT~

“I thought you said you were meeting Camila.”
I jump at the sound of Dad’s voice and spin in his direction. “I am.”
Dad studies me, and I hide my hands behind my back to conceal the slight quiver that could announce my guilt. When I left him, he was in good spirits, but his moods can quickly shift. There are two patched up holes in my bedroom that can testify to this. Dad replaced the drywall, covered it with fresh paint, but the perfection can’t take away the memory of the way my heart pounded through my chest as he drove his fist through the wall.
He inclines his head toward the booth of balloon animals. “Camila appears to be working.”
“She’s getting off soon,” I say too fast as I bite back the need to ask why he didn’t go home like he said he was.
“Why did you leave us if she’s still working? You said Camila would be done by five-thirty.”
My mouth dries out, and the tremble in my hands travels to the rest of my body, but I force out a cleansing breath. Show no fear. Don’t give him any reason to doubt a thing I say. “She was supposed to be off by now, but her parents asked her to work a few more minutes.”
“If Camila isn’t getting off until later, you should have told me,” There’s a subtle sharpness to his tone that causes hurricane warnings in my brain. “I was showing you a great deal of trust by letting you find Camila on your own.”
“She’s only running a few minutes late. Her parents are watching me so I’m okay.”
Out of the corner of my eye, I glance over and my heart lifts when I notice Camila’s mom watching us. Her stare gives credibility to every falsehood rolling off my tongue. She’s not watching because she thinks I need a babysitter, but probably because she’s mentioned to Camila that she’s perplexed by my father’s strict rules.
I touch the crystals on the table as if I’m interested in them. It’s difficult to act normal as Dad looks at Camila’s mom then studies me. Please believe me, please believe me. Please.
I’m so stupid. I should have never left Dad early. I should have never lied. But I did. Dad was having fun at the fair, Mom was having fun and my sister, Isabelle, was having fun. They were all laughing and smiling. They’ve forgiven him, and I haven’t. I can’t, not again, and this is one of the many ways life is no longer simple.
I want to peek at him in an attempt to understand my fate, but I don’t. Eye contact doesn’t help when he’s angry. It only makes it worse.
Being in public won’t soothe his temper. He’ll just be more discreet. Like last year when Dad had arrived early to pick me up at a football game and saw me heading to the bathroom by myself. After I had returned to my friends, he called me away with a smile on his face. He had placed a seemingly loving arm around my shoulder, but his fingers dug into my arm as he severely whispered in my ear how I was irresponsible and that it was time to go home.
Dad didn’t cause a scene at the game. The yelling started the moment we were alone in his car and continued until he left me in my room. I stayed on my bed for hours, curled up in a ball and sobbing.
My throat swells as I think of how this will play out. Will it be like Christmas? Will he throw a lamp and force Mom to clean it up as I watch? Or will it be like this past spring and he’ll flip the kitchen table, breaking all the dishes that had been placed there for dinner?
Dad steps closer to me, and I’m filled with dread. “Next time, in a situation like this, you return to me and have Camila text you when she’s done working. I don’t like the idea of you being alone.”
All I want is to be alone, for my thoughts and actions to belong only to me. But he’s not angry, he’s believing me, and I release a breath I had unknowingly held and take the small win.

Gritty and real, Only a Breath Apart is a story of hope conjured from pain, strength drawn from innocence, and love earned from self-respect. Beautiful, poignant, and fierce.” ―Kristen Simmons, critically acclaimed author of the Article 5 series

  Review: 5 STARS!!

Katie McGarry is one of my favorite YA authors and Only a Breath Apart is one of my favorites by her now!! This book was a very emotional one for me, not that her books usually aren't, but something about this one really grabbed me and held on.

This book isn't just about a couple and how they fall in love, no, Katie McGarry added in very real situations and scenarios in this book. A lot of people, no matter the age, can relate to something going on in this book and I loved that Katie McGarry did this. It is not everyday that a contemporary YA romance book has religion in it and I think Katie wrote it very tastefully and it didn't overpower the book. Also, and this one might be a hard limit for people, but abuse. Seeing inside Scarlett's head really made me stop and think about these things she was going through and the questions she was always asking herself.

The romance of this book was beautiful. Jesse and Scarlett used to be friends, but then he ended he friendship. Together though, they find their way back to each other and not only does friendship blossom, but love. Jesse and Scarlett heal and help each other. Throughout the book we get to see as they each peel back layers of each other and we get to see more of them and it just made fall deeper in love with these characters. This book will take you on an emotional journey and it will break your heart but it will also heal it. I loved this book and I cannot wait for what Katie McGarry comes out with next!!

Review Blitz for We Shouldn't by Vi Keeland

WeShouldnt_Title
A Standalone Contemporary Romance
#1 New York Times Bestselling Author Vi Keeland

we shouldn't live now square

SYNOPSIS:

Bennett Fox walked into my life on one hell of a crappy Monday morning.

I was late for the first day at my new job—a job I’d now have to compete for even though I’d already worked eight years to earn it, because of an unexpected merger.

While I lugged my belongings up to my new office, a meter maid wrote me a parking summons.

She’d ticketed a long line of cars—except for the Audi parked in front of me, which happened to be the same make and model as mine.

Annoyed, I decided to regift my ticket to the car that had evaded a fine. Chances were, the owner would pay it and be none the wiser.

Except, I accidentally broke the windshield wiper while slipping the ticket onto the car’s window.

Seriously, my day couldn’t get any worse.

Things started to perk up when I ran into a gorgeous man in the elevator. We had one of those brief moments that only happened in movies.

You know the deal…your body lights up, fireworks go off, and the air around you crackles with electricity.

His heated stare left me flushed when I stepped off the elevator.

Maybe things here wouldn’t be so bad after all.

Or so I thought.

Until I walked into my new boss’s office and met my competition.

The gorgeous man from the elevator was now my nemesis. His heated stare wasn’t because of any mutual attraction. It was because he’d seen me vandalize his car. And now he couldn’t wait to annihilate his rival.

There’s a fine line between love and hate—and we shouldn’t cross it.

We shouldn’t—but straddling that line could be so much fun.

Review: 5 STARS!!

I love Vi Keeland's writing and We Shouldn't is no different!! This book had a bit enemies to friends and an office romance in it and I thoroughly enjoyed it!!

Bennett & Annalise are not only hot for each other, they are hot for each other's jobs too. That's right...this isn't your normal office romance, no, it's about when two people meet, they feel an instant attraction and think that maybe something will happen, then they walk into work and they meet their competition and it just so happens to be the person that they thought they might have something with.

Bennett is a man who doesn't see his worth. He is very intelligent and business savvy, but what he doesn't understand is that he is worthy of love and it is out there for him. Annalise is a hard worker and she proves it throughout this book. She is also smart and kind and she is the one to show Bennett that he is worthy of love. Together, they are explosive, in and outside of work. I love their competitive spirits and I love that they don't bring their work home with them. Vi Keeland really did a great job with this book and I cannot wait for what she comes out with next!!

Release Blitz & Review for Darkness Embraced by Tillie Cole

THE DEEPEST LOVE CAN BE BORN FROM THE FIERCEST HATE…

Born to sit on opposing thrones.
They were never meant to fall.

Tanner Ayers is the heir of the Texas Ku Klux Klan. Fed nothing but hate, violence, and intolerance from the day he was born, Tanner kills for his cause without remorse.
Until he meets Adelita Quintana, the daughter of the most brutal cartel boss in Mexico.
Adelita and Tanner hate each other instantly. But there is something between them that neither can explain or deny. Hate turns to desire, desire turns to love, and for the first time Tanner sees how wrong his whole life has been.
For years, Tanner does everything he can to find a way for him and Adelita. He walks away from the Klan, his family, everything he ever believed, and joins the Hades Hangmen. But now the Hangmen are at war—not only with his own family, but with Adelita’s too.
When Adelita and Tanner are thrown together again, they are forced to fight for a love that should never have been. For a love that puts them and everyone they have ever loved in danger.
The White Prince.
The cartel princess.
And a future that seems shrouded in darkness…

Dark Contemporary Romance. Contains sexual situations, violence, sensitive and taboo subjects, offensive language and mature topics. Recommended for age 18 years and up.

When we pulled up to the small chapel, I let the driver open the door and escort me inside. Candles were still lit, illuminating the dark room. I reached out to the old stone walls and smiled. I always felt safer here. At peace.
Free.
I let the rows of candles lead me along the aisle and down the stairs until I reached the place I knew Luis would be. As always, he was hunched over his books. “Adelita?” I’d shocked him. He glanced at the clock on his wall. “You’re here late.”
I checked the driver had stayed by the main door. When I faced Luis, my only true friend left here in Mexico, from childhood, I let my eyes fill with water and held up my hand, showing the ring. Luis’s eyes fell in sympathy, and his face paled somewhat. “Adelita,” he whispered. I shook my head. Luis was the one person I could let my guard down with. The only one who truly knew the real me, and . . .
“Tanner,” I whispered, and my voice caught on a pained breath. “Luis . . . what about Tanner?”
Luis rushed over to me and took me in his arms. I cried into his shoulder, hearing him lock the door behind us. Luis let me cry until my legs felt weak and all the energy had drained from my body.
Luis and I sat on his small couch. He held my hand, just like he had done, years ago, when I’d fallen for the prince of the Ku Klux Klan . . . when Tanner had had to leave me . . . and in the months, then years, when I didn’t hear from him. When he didn’t return.
“Diego was always determined,” Luis eventually said. He sighed and faced me. I knew my face would look tired and worn. Luis squeezed my hand tighter. “When?”
“Three weeks,” I said, my voice broken with sadness. I laughed without humor. “I’m sure you’ll be told come morning.”

Review: 5 STARS!!

OH MY GOSH!!!! THIS BOOK!!!!! Tanner & Adelita are EVERYTHING to me right now!! Every time I finish a Hangmen book by Tillie Cole, I think, there is no way that she can top what she just wrote and with EVERY SINGLE BOOK she proves me wrong.

I have been intrigued by Tanner's character ever since Heart Recaptured and with ever book, we have gotten jut basically puzzle pieces and FINALLY this book is where we get to put all the pieces together!! Getting into Tanner's head and seeing parts of his past and his daily guilt trips and daily seclusion basically, really weighed heavily on my heart. He knew that he grew up with the wrong beliefs and now has been trying to prove to not only himself but his brotherhood that he has changed and wants to be a real part of this family. I think being in Tanner's head really gave him a more real person complex. I felt his emotions; his heartbreak, his passion, his depression, his guilt, his sacrifices, his wanting to belong to his brotherhood/family full on with everyone and his deep, unyielding and undying love for Adelita.

Adelita, oh this girl was something else. She was the PERFECT match for Tanner. I LOVED seeing their back story of how they met and how they basically became to be the new age Romeo and Juliet. Adelita may be younger than Tanner, but growing up as a cartel princesa, she knew what was expected of her and she also knew the dangers that came with the cartel. I loved that Adelita was a proud Mexican. She wrote that title with pride and rubbed it in Tanner's face and I just laughed every time she would get under his skin. She was feisty, smart, sexy, strong willed, caring and loyal. Adelita's character was definitely put through the ringer in this book. Her world gets rocked more than once in this book and some of the revelations are bad and some are good. It made Adelita's character stronger in my opinion and I love when a character's foundation can get rocked and that character can grow from it and that is what Adelita did.

Tanner & Adelita sacrifice a lot for each other. They love each other so deeply that even when they are apart, you can feel their love for each other. The brothers in this book surprised me a bit, especially when it came to Tanner, but at the same time, I believe Tillie Cole wrote certain parts how she did, because Tanner still needed to prove himself in some ways. I LOVE Tank & Tanner's friendship!!! I loved seeing Tank go to bat for Tanner against Styx and Ky, I may have fist pumped at that part!! There are so many things that happen in this book that I just want to re read it all over again!! I am PRAYING that a certain red headed giant and a certain best friend get together and get a book soon...okay, maybe their book can be the next Hangmen book...who knows, I am just so excited for the next book!!!

When she is not writing, Tillie enjoys nothing more than curling up on her couch watching movies, drinking far too much coffee, while convincing herself that she really doesn’t need that extra square of chocolate.
