Review for Black Hearts by Karina Halle

Title: Black Hearts

Author: Karina Halle
Publisher: Metal Blonde Books
Published: February 18, 2017

Synopsis

Sexy & Sinful...Vicente is the alpha male to die for...
From New York Times bestselling author Karina Halle comes a BRAND NEW standalone duet that will get your pulse racing.

For Vicente Bernal, truth is all he's known. The son of an infamous drug lord, Vicente was born to help run the family business, which means he's been raised on a throne of sordid pasts and dirty laundry, violence and pride. But when Vicente stumbles across someone he's not supposed to know about - a woman from his father's checkered past - he sets out to California to find her behind his father's back.

What Vicente doesn't expect to find in San Francisco is Violet McQueen, the woman's twenty-year old daughter. Beautiful and edgy with a vulnerability he can't resist, Violet tempts Vicente from afar and though he promised himself he'd stay away from her, curiosity and lust are powerful forces. Besides, Vicente has always gotten everything he wants - why shouldn't he have Violet too?

Soon his wants turn into an obsession, one that sweeps Violet into his games as they fall madly, deeply in love with each other, the type of first love that can drive a person mad.

But it's a love with tragic consequences.

Both the truth - and the lies - not only threaten to tear them apart, but threaten their very lives.

Someone has to pay for the sins of the fathers.

And they'll be paying the price with their souls.

NOTE: BLACK HEARTS is BOOK ONE of the SINS DUET, with the sequel & conclusion, DIRTY SOULS, releasing on March 17, 2017.

Review: 5 STARS!!

Let me just start by saying that it is not necessary to read any of the back story before starting this book. With that said, OH MY GOSH THIS BOOK WAS FANTASTIC!! Black Hearts will grip your heart and soul and dig its claws into you until you are so consumed by these characters and this story that you don't know up from down.

Violet was such an intriguing character. She wasn't your normal girl next door, yet she also wasn't your normal bad@$$ chick (usually the heroine is one of those types). She was unique because she felt...everything!! She was misunderstood and just wanted to be free. When she met Vicente, it was like she could breathe for the first time. He brought her out of her head and she showed him the beauty of the world, well at least of San Francisco. Violet was smart and very observant. I loved being inside her head, it was always entertaining. I loved the suspense around her family and her and her brother, Ben, figuring out secrets that their parents have tried to hide. My heart went out to Ben for what he found out and how he found out. I hope that that situation gets handled and no one is too damaged by the outcome. I understand Violet's need to be free and I want that for her, but I also want her to be safe and I truly hope that she gets her happy ending with Vicente that she and he deserve. The passion that Vicente ignites insides of Violet was seriously off the charts hot (I was fanning myself throughout all of the scenes) and I loved that she got out of her head and was in the moment with Vicente.

Vicente is downright sexy. He is a very cunning man who knows what he wants and goes after it and doesn't let anything or anyone stand in his way. In the beginning, I felt bad for what he was trying to pull with Violet, but then seeing him change from playing her to falling in love with her, was wonderfully twisted to see unfold. Vicente is a very determined man and he is very protective and possessive of Violet. I love the dominant man in him when he and Violet are having sexy times. He knows exactly what she wants and needs and delivers it gladly to her. I love that even with the short amount of time that he has known her, he gets her better than anyone else. I felt bad for what Vicente went through as a boy and what he was forced to do at such a young age, but at the same time, his dad is Javier Bernal, so I would expect nothing less. Vicente may have started off with wrong intentions, but by the end of the book, he would lay down his life for Violet and I just loved his character!!

Honestly, I never read any of the back story books and while reading this book, by not reading those books, it made it that much more intense and suspenseful. I will definitely go back and read them just because they are by Karina Halle, but also because I would love to know all of the parents' past. Karina Halle knocked this book out of the park and I am so ANXIOUS for the next book to come out in March!!!
